Impatiens or Begonias? Coleus or Purslane?

purslane in a mix of colors

Annual or seasonal flowers bring a lot of color to the landscape, but they do increase costs and labor significantly. Plan before you plant.

Impatiens, Begonias, Petunias, Marigolds, Caladiums, Coleus, Periwinkles, Purslane, Torenias, Portulaca, and other seasonal plants are just the thing for maximum visual impact in the landscape, especially when used in areas you wish to accentuate, such as entrances, sculptures, water features, etc... Annuals should be used in groupings of several plants together, not singly. Using too few plants in landscape groupings will fail to make an impact at all, while too many have a dulling effect and lessen the visual impact of the landscape as a whole.

There are many factors to be considered in annual selection: season, light, water, fertility, soil type, size, color and visual appeal and effect. Also the surrounding landscape must be considered as well. Planting annuals which have high water requirements could adversely effect surrounding plants and lawn grasses.
