What is a Xeriscape?xeriscape03

A Xeriscape is a landscape which requires little or no supplemental irrigation. Often Xeriscapes make use of indigenous or native plant species which are adapted to the local environment. Non-invasive exotic plant species which are suitable are often planted alongside native plants to create contrast or to add focal points to the landscape.

Xeriscapes are created by:

  • choosing plants that have water needs and tolerances which match the local environment

  • hydrozoning: Plant water loving plants in wet areas and drought tolerant plants in dry areas

  • minimal uage of turfgrass, and using drought tolerant turfgrasses

  • using low-volume drip irrigation wherever possible

  • conserving water in the soil by reducing runoff through use of groundcover plants and mulches
